Makara Chaula (Odia: ମକର ଚାଉଳ) is the customary naivedya presented to gods and goddesses on Makara Sankranti (Odia: ମକର ସଂକ୍ରାନ୍ତି) in every Odia family. This is a combination of newly harvested rice and several ingredients.
Ingredients for Makar Chaula:
- Arua Chaula (newly harvested)
- Coconut
- Ripe Banana
- Fruits
- Raw Milk
- Sugar/jaggery (as per your taste)
- Sesame
- ginger
- Khai/Liaa
- Chhena Puddings
Fruits:
- Pomegranate
- Apple
- Cheery
- Orange
- Any fruits could be added as per your choice.
Making Process:
- Soak the rice (Arua Chaula) for 4 to 5 hours before washing and draining it.
- Grind the wet rice, but don't create a fine paste out of it; keep it rough.
- To the rice paste, add all of the fruits (cut into small pieces), banana, grated ginger, khai, sugar, sesame, chenna pudding, and milk.
- The Makara Chaula is prepared. You can also add small pieces of sugarcane to it.
